Nikolas Ferreira Brazil's most-voted deputy voted against free cooking gas for the poor

Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG) was reelected in 2026 with 3,119,318 votes, the most-voted deputy in the country[1]. In the Câmara, he voted against a free gas canister for 15 million poor families[2, 3]. He also voted against taxing the funds of the super-rich and against removing the tax on basic food basket items[2, 4].

Against free gas and cheaper food

On 02/02/2026, the Câmara passed Gás do Povo by 415 votes to 29. Nikolas was one of the 29 who voted No[2]. The program gives a free 13-kilo gas canister, straight from the seller, and was designed for 15 million families[3]. It covers people in CadÚnico, the register for social programs, who live on up to half a minimum wage per person[12].

Later, he explained his vote: "Of course I voted against Gás do Povo," because "the government can't do charity with other people's money"[13].

On 07/06/2023, he voted No twice to the tax reform, the change in the taxes on what people buy. It passed 382 to 118 and 375 to 113[2]. The text ends the tax on the basic food basket, fruit, vegetables and eggs, and creates "cashback," giving back part of the tax to reduce income inequality[4].

Against the tax on the super-rich

On 10/25/2023, the Câmara voted 323 to 119 to tax exclusive funds and offshores. Nikolas voted No[2]. An exclusive fund is an investment tailored to one person, with a minimum of R$10 million. An offshore is a company abroad where Brazilians keep money. The bill charges 15% on offshore gains, and the government expected to raise R$7 billion from them and R$11 billion from the funds in 2024[6].

Protection for politicians and a lighter sentence for Bolsonaro

On 09/16/2025, he voted Yes in both rounds of the Shield amendment, a change to the Constitution passed in the Câmara 353 to 134 and 344 to 133[2]. Under the text, deputies and senators could only be investigated or arrested if Congress itself allowed it[7].

On 09/17/2025, he voted Yes to fast-track the amnesty bill, passed 311 to 163[2]. On 12/09/2025, he voted Yes to the Sentencing bill (PL da Dosimetria), which cuts the sentences of Jair Bolsonaro and of those convicted for January 8, passed 291 to 148[8]. On 04/30/2026, he voted to override Lula's veto of that bill, overridden 318 to 144[14].

On 02/25/2026, he said all his political capital "will be directed" to Flávio Bolsonaro[15]. On 10/07/2026, about Supreme Court justice Alexandre de Moraes, he said: "the path is simple: impeachment and jail"[16].

In court

Ordered to pay, charged by prosecutors and a defendant

On 07/30/2026, the 5th Civil Court of Brasília ordered Nikolas to pay R$20,000 to the PT over a post that called the party the "Partido dos Traficantes" (Drug Dealers' Party)[9]. It is a civil ruling, not a criminal conviction, from a first-instance court: it can be appealed[10].

In 2024, the Prosecutor-General's Office charged him at the Supreme Court with insult (injúria), an offense against someone's honor, for calling Lula a "thief." He has been charged by prosecutors but is not yet a defendant[17]. In Belo Horizonte, he has been a defendant since 09/21/2023 for transphobia, over a 2022 video about a trans girl in a school bathroom. No ruling is known[5].

On 09/03/2026, audio came out in which he asks banker Daniel Vorcaro, of Banco Master, to help a former aide release "a mineral asset"; Nikolas confirmed the contact[18]. The next day, he admitted reposting a fake Federal Police document saying he was not under investigation[11]. Because of this, he faces a case in the Minas electoral court, not yet judged, that could cost him his seat and bar him from running for eight years[19].
